Wise Owls Past Events
Here are just some of the more recent events that have happened at Wise Owls.December 2011 - Christmas Tree Festival
The Christmas Tree Festival, arranged by the National Trust, was held in the cloisters at Lacock Abbey during December. Our tree showed children are the focus of our group helped by their families, staff and committee members. Staff arranged for the children from Pre-school and toddlers to make Christmas Owls which were very popular with the visitors, they were impressed the children had made them themselves and thought they were very cute. We were in a windy spot in the cloisters at first and they did try to fly away so the tree was moved to a corner. Other decorations were made by families at home and by the committee, the star for the top showed some children’s activities in Pre-school. 3700 visitors came to look at the trees and we were obviously noticed as in the votes for the favourite tree we came a very close second to ‘Knit and Natter’. As well as an enjoyable community event it also provided some free marketing. Thank you all for your efforts, hopefully this event or something similar will be repeated next year.
December 2011 - Childrens Christmas Party
This year the Christmas party started with childrens entertainer Dave Hickory. The children from the pre-school
and toddler group enjoyed balloon modelling and and magic tricks, with every child receiving a balloon model to take home. They then sat down to enjoy delicious party food which was followed by a visit from Father Christmas. All the children received a gift of a book. The grand raffle was drawn and we would like to say a big thank you to all the local businesses who supported us by donating prizes, including; The Red Lion in Lacock, Watlins, Organised Little Things, Susan Haney, Mocili, Quintessentially English, Body & Soul from Corsham and The Wiltshire Chilli Farm. Also a huge thank you to everyone who bought raffle tickets and to parents and committee members who organised the party and of course a special thank you to Father Christmas!

After Helen's successful visit in March which everyone enjoyed, we had another opportunity to decorate some pottery. This time the theme was Christmas decorations. The children painted Christmas tree decorations, including; baubles, stars, hearts, gingerbread men and Christmas trees. A messy time was had by all.
October 2011 - Police Visit
We had a visit from PC Pete. The children really enjoyed listening to him talk about all the different equipment that policemen have to carry around with them and the children all got to try on his hat. After that we all got to say hello to the control room on the radio. We all walked up to the car park where the children got to play in the police car. This was great fun for everyone involved.

July 2011 - Leavers Celebration
This was a lovely way to wave off the children that are moving on to school, and also those that are moving house in the holidays. The children from Willow class at Lacock school joined us as we sang songs the children had chosen themselves from their time at Wise Owls. There was a presentation of a leavers certificate and a dap bag to all the children moving on. It is always sad to say goodbye but we hope that the children will carry on enjoying themselves and their learning. We also said a special thank you and goodbye to Sandra our much loved Deputy Supervisor who has now retired. Serena presented her with a card made by the children, a stone owl for her garden, a rose and gift vouchers. She also had her very own leavers certificate! We also presented Helen with a card and flowers and wish her well in her recovery from her operation. We look forward to seeing her back in September.
July 2011 - Sports Picnic
With great weather, it was Wise Owls Sports Day Picnic. As parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters settled down with picnics ready the children arrived on their walking ropes. This year it was the children themselves who designed some of the races so we had jumping, spinning and climbing through hoops! The favourite had to be the egg and spoon race. With races for the toddlers, parents and staff as well everyone had a fantastic time. We were joined by Willow class from Lacock School who had their own races. All the children received a medal and a certificate for their efforts before sitting down to a well-earned picnic.

July 2011 - Brokerswood Family Day Trip
This year for our Wise Owls summer trip we decided to visit Brokeswood near Westbury. The children had fun in one of the several play areas whilst we waited for everyone to arrive. Next was a ride on the train through the wood with many of children looking forward to this all week! After we departed the station we made our way to the café for refreshments and decided the lake would be our next stop, to feed the ducks and geese. Much to the children’s delight the ducks were very hungry and many of them left the water to feed on the remains of the food just in front of the children’s feet! We then walked along the path through the woods and found a picnic stop amongst the trees. With energy levels now running on full we made our way back along the path to another play area with slides, a seesaw, plenty of things to climb and swing on and the favourite amongst the children the zip wire! The children played happily in the sunshine until it was time to go home, via the shop for an ice-cream for the lucky ones!

April 2011 - Lackham Visit
Today was our family outing to Lackham. We all met by the museum in the glorious sunshine and were taken to the animal centre. We had the chance to see otters, guinea pigs, peacocks, fish, chip monks, meerkats, prairie dogs, goats, monkeys and a very large rabbit! Next was the woodland where the children had the option to build either a den or a birds nest. For the younger children there were scavenger hunt sheets with a list of things to find including something yellow, scented, delicate, tickly, sticky, bright or soft. The children really enjoyed their time in the wood but as tummy’s started to rumble we made our way to the picnic tables for a well-earned lunch and a hot drink for the grownups! A great time was had by all.

The Pre-school children joined with the toddlers this year for the Wise Owl’s Easter egg hunt. We all met by the Abbey gates and then followed a trail of brightly coloured eggs to the Orchard. The children were then given their Easter baskets which they had decorated in Pre-school and continued the egg hunt amongst the primroses and daffodils. Although we all got a bit wet the children enjoyed themselves and were very happy with their chocolate eggs at home time!

After this we all sat and enjoyed our picnic before returning to pre-school in the afternoon
May 2010 – Scarecrow Trail
The Lacock scarecrow trail was held from 29th to 31st May 2010 around the village. Wise Owls made a scarecrow for the trail and there were staff and committee members in the village during the trail selling cotton bags to raise money for the pre–school. These bags have an original sketch of the village and will be a great accessory for all occasions. It was a busy weekend, with lots happening around the village.
May 2010 – Roves Farm
Today was the Wise Owls coach trip to Roves Farm in Swindon. The weather was perfect - sunny but not too hot!
We left the village at 9.15am and we arrived at the farm at about 10am excited and looking forward to our day.
The first thing to do was the tractor ride - very bumpy! The kids (both big and small) loved this.
After this it was time to meet the animals. We held rabbits, guinnea pigs, piglets and a duckling!
The children were given warm bottles of milk to feed the lambs.
All the children thoroughly enjoyed this part of the trip.
We all sat in the sunshine for a picnic lunch whilst the children played in the outside play area.
The time went too fast and all too soon it was time to get back on the coach for the trip home.
The day was a huge success and everyone had a really good time.
Can't wait for the next one!!

May 2010 – Pirate Day
Today we joined the children of Willow class (Reception and Year 1) at Lacock school for their Pirate Day celebrations. The children from the Pre-school were given the opportunity to dress up as pirates and we joined the school children on a “pirate treasure hunt” all around the village. We followed clues that had been left at various locations within the village by “Pirate Pete” who had his treasure stolen by some nasty pirates. The children had a fantastic time and were looked after extremely well by the school children. We would like to thank everyone involved for making it such an enjoyable experience.
